Security Clearance

While applying for a job overseas I was asked if I have security clearance. Since I served 8yrs in the Army with an Honorable Discharge, does that mean I already have some sort of security clearance? If not, is that usually takin care of during the employment process?

Security Clearance
by: Alan

Stan,

Anyone currently in the service has a minimum of a secret security clearance. Weather it's still valid or not would depend on how long you've been out of the service. Depending on the position and your skill set vs need, the company may help you get a clearance or even an interim secret clearance in the mean time. The same thing happened to a friend of mine who works IT and was prior military. However, most companies requiring a security clearance of Top Secret or higher will typicaly recruit people who already have it.

The best way to answer that is; If you don't know if you have a Security Clearance, you DON'T have a Security Clearance.

If you had a job with a Government Contractor and you quit to work at another Company and had a clearance when you applied to the other company, you could honestly say "Yes" on your application, but you would generally have to be Cleared again when starting at the new company.
If I was working for KBR in Iraq and was hired by ITT while IN Iraq, while making the transition the men I knew retained their Government I.D. which was there clearance, because they did not leave Theater, however, they would have to give the Card up at the Bagdad Airport if the transfer required them to go back to the States to begin their job.
I hope this helped.
