What am I doing wrong?

by Stan P.
(Erlanger, KY)

I am a Gulf War veteran and master electrician. I have posted my resume and applied for jobs with all three govt. contractors. So far I have only received one reply and the recruiter mentioned hiring younger men. Am I considered too old at 41?

Stan,
Master electricians are in definite demand, especially in the Middle East.
Companies like Dyncorp, ITT, Fluor, and KBR are the major contract holders, the problem is, right now there is a shift from KBR being the "Big Dog" contractor.
Emailing these companies does not mean an immediate reply, my call from KBR took 12 months.
You will probably be working for some company here in the States and have totally forgotten about your application when you get a phone call. Which is why you should maintain a current contact number with all companies concerned.
Good luck.

Your doing nothing wrong

Hi Stan,

You're definitely not to old at 41. I've seen folks at retirement age still contracting in the Middle East. It surprises me that they told you this. Without knowing the details it sound like age discrimination!

I would recommend that you continue to monitor the job postings for these companies as well as others. Sometimes it takes time. If you're consistent you'll find that job.
