Who do we contact for good paying jobs where we can bring our family?

by Tanya

How do we get started looking? The process is so overwhelming to us. My husband is a carpenter and can operate forklifts etc... and I am a teacher by trade but would do any work at all. We do have 5 kids and would want to go as a family. Does anyone know a good source to start with? Thank you so much!!

I am prior service & my husband is still active duty. I don't know where to find jobs to that allow me to bring my son. I would like to get a job that is close to a base where my husband can get stationed. Thanks for any help!!

THANKS!!
by: Tanya

Doc and Alan...
Thank you so much for posting comments. Alan, your site is wonderful!! Very informative and Doc is helpful to so many people. Due to job shortages around us we were just told to look into this, but have no idea if the pay is worth us taking it on!! We're up for anything though, and I would be happy to home school my kids or enroll them in a school where I was teaching. I just honestly don't know if there are American schools there where any of this would work out, and my husband doesn't really want to leave for a year without us unless a contract allowed him to come home every few months. If we are unreasonable in even considering this, please let me know...I won't be offended!! We're just looking into all of our options and trying to be open minded :) Your site is the first one I've been on that really seemed legitimate and trustworthy. I know I sound naive here, but how do I even contact the state department? You mentioned starting there. THANKS SO MUCH!!

Moving to the Middle East with your family
by: Alan

Hi Tanya,

Thanks for posting your family picture. You have a beautiful family!

Obviously you'll have to travel to locations which will support a family unit. Locations such as Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia among others. It will be difficult with a large family as you'll need to ensure schooling for your children through the local community or home school yourself since you're a teacher. I worked with a guy that worked/lived in Bahrain with his wife, three children (one born in country) and two dogs. Both dogs traveled over with them. All of the folks I've worked with supported DoD contracts and as such received certain benefits as defined in the contract. These include housing, leased car and other amenities. You can not ship a car to the Middle East so it must be leased. I agree with Doc, check with the State Department and see what kind of vacancies they may have for someone with your skills in the Middle East. In the mean time, I'll check around and see what else I can dig up. Stay in touch.

Dear Tanya
by: Doc

I have seen Husbands and Wives working together in Iraq, but I have never seen their children as it was a War Zone. Contracting in Saudi Arabia would probably be your best bet for families, but don't expect much freedom of movement.
To get a job as a Teacher for American Children I would first check with the State Dept. and ask them to direct you to the proper agency for the position, as for your Husband, there may be construction positions in the Oil Fields.
The alternative would be for you to work one place while he works another and honestly, I would not recommend it.
Don't let it get you down, it is daunting, but the rewards could be worth it.
Good luck.
